(I posted <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/07/18/great-news-citi-loses-2-5-billion/">here</a> and <a href="http://bstocksdev.weblogsinc.com/2008/07/21/more-great-news-bank-of-americas-profit-plunges-41/">here</a> about this phenomenon with <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys"><strong><font color="#0072bc">Citigroup</font></strong></a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys"><font color="#0072bc">C</font></a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">Bank of America</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">BAC</a>) respectively). Now, the <em><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/23/business/23bank.html?hp">New York Times</a></em> reports that five banks lost billions, or saw their profits plunge, but their stock prices rose an average of 12.9% in the wake of those reports. </p>
<p>Why? The conventional wisdom suggests that investors expected them to do much worse and were pleasantly surprised. And this phenomenon is not confined to banks -- this morning, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/yahoo-inc/yhoo/nas">Yahoo</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/yahoo-inc/yhoo/nas">YHOO</a>), which reported a penny less profit per share than the <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/companyNewsMolt/idUKN2242084020080723?sp=true">10 cents</a> analysts had expected, is up 3% in premarket, reportedly because it did not lower its guidance.</p>
<p>I am not convinced by conventional wisdom about why these stocks are up. My hunch is that there were many traders who sold short the stocks of these companies because they expected them to do worse than they actually did. When reported results beat expectations, investors bought the stocks, perhaps due to bottom fishing. These buyers caused the stocks to rise enough to trigger margin calls for those who were short. The shorts bought to satisfy those margin requirements, causing a buying panic. I wish I had data to test this hypothesis.</p><p>Here are five examples:</p>
<ul>
    <li>
    <div>Citigroup reports $2.5 billion loss -- expected loss was $3.67 billion -- stock rises 9.7%.</div>
    </li>
    <li>Bank of America reports 41% drop in EPS -- expected decline was 48% -- stock creeps up 3.8%. </li>
    <li><strong><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">Wachovia</a></strong> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">WB</a>) declares $8.9 billion loss, stock soars 29%. This could have something to do with its announcement that it would <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/News/Story/wachovia-gains-30-ceo-says/story.aspx?guid=%7B4805DAB2%2D7B75%2D4199%2D913E%2DEE7D5113E689%7D">not issue new shares</a> that would dilute existing shareholders. </li>
    <li><strong><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/washington-mutual-incorporated/wm/nys">Washington Mutual</a></strong> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/washington-mutual-incorporated/wm/nys">WM</a>) loses $3.3 billion, stock goes up 6.2% -- its loss of $3.34 a share was <a href="http://www.mercurynews.com/business/ci_9960951">triple the $1.05 loss analysts had expected</a>. I cannot even begin to explain why the stock rose. </li>
    <li><strong><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/suntrust-banks-inc/sti/nys">SunTrust Banks</a></strong> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/suntrust-banks-inc/sti/nys">STI</a>) profit declines 21% -- expected decline was <a href="http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200807220645DOWJONESDJONLINE000251_FORTUNE5.htm">66%</a> -- stock increases 16%. This one makes some sense to me. </li>
</ul>
<p>Does this mean that the bottom fishers are right? It's possible, but I doubt it. My hunch is that it will take more than another quarter or two to clear out all the problems from an <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/07/22/will-the-real-estate-collapse-cost-america-8-trillion/">$8 trillion</a> loss of wealth in America resulting from the real estate market collapse. These recent upticks could be a classic bear market rally. If you are a short-term trader who jumped in last week, be prepared to take your profits.</p>

Before you send me your rant that the pain has just begun and I am foolish to believe the recent market upswing is anything but a short term reprieve, let me share a few thoughts.<br /><br />Today <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">Wachovia Corp</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">WB</a>) <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/_a/bbdp/wachovia-shares-tank-on-huge-loss/93689">reported a loss of $1.30 a share</a> compared to the average analysts' guess of $1.27 a share. WB lost almost $9 billion, is cutting the dividend and will layoff 6,400 employees. All bad news <em>-- and still the the stock</em><em> and the DJIA are up!<strong><br /><br /></strong></em>At the same time, oil is trading down about $4 a barrel during the busiest driving time of the year because people are actually conserving gas. The market is working. It should also be noted that after the Bush administration spent over seven and a half years stating various preconditions to establishing relations with Iran, last week they decided to send an envoy and start a dialog. It may be good or bad politics depending on your view <em>-- but it is only good for the stabilization of oil prices.</em><p>The Federal Reserve Board led by chairman Ben Bernanke has held fast to the current 2% Fed rate and made it clear on several occasions that the rate will hold. This is a clear sign the Fed intends to have a bias toward inflation for the time being (although that can change) and is more likely to raise rates, and this should prevent further erosion of the dollar. I do not have any idea when or if inflation will start to erode our economy but a period of consistent interest rates sets the right course and <em>stable interest rates and a stable dollar are a good thing.</em><br /><br />There are many more signs that the market is turning. This should not be viewed as a Pollyanna attitude on my part that we have already seen the worst or things will not take another downturn. If the Dow started back down and approached 10,000 it would not shock me, but I think that it would take something we are not aware of now to do that.<br /><br />This morning <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/united-parcel-service-cl-b/ups/nys">United Parcel</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/united-parcel-service-cl-b/ups/nys">UPS</a>) <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/_a/bbdp/ups-profit-drops-lowers-outlook/93863">reported a 21% loss </a>in the quarter and a negative outlook <em>and the stock is up. </em><strong><em><br /></em></strong><br /><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/unitedhealth-group-incorporated/unh/nys">UnitedHealth Group Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/unitedhealth-group-incorporated/unh/nys">UNH</a>) 2Q profit falls and the report from the <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D922VR8O0.htm">AP</a> is exemplary of the type of attitude I see from the long players (like me): "Shares of managed-care provider UnitedHealth Group Inc. jumped 9 percent Tuesday after the company reported sharply lower second-quarter earnings because of lawsuit settlements and a tough economy, <em>but still beat Wall Street expectations</em>" (my emphasis). <br /><br /> I am not declaring that the recent market bounce is the beginning of a positive stock market run but I do believe the groundwork is being set for improvement in the markets. While there are plenty of places you can and will read about gloom and doom, I am changing my outlook to positive and have already reported that when the <em>"</em>boys of summer<em>" </em>appear for spring training next year there will be many investors who will look back on this summer as a missed buying opportunity.<br /><br />I called it last week with <a target="_blank" title="View Will Bush throw a change-up at Yankee Stadium? on BloggingStocks" href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/07/15/will-bush-throw-a-change-up-at-yankee-stadium/">Will Bush throw a change-up at Yankee Stadium?</a> Bush threw out that ball and extended a hand to the Iranians at the same time -- and the tide has turned.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2006/05/24/about-the-stock-bloggers-sheldon-d-liber-aia/"><em>Sheldon Liber</em></a><em> is the CEO of a small private investment company and the principal for design and research at an architecture &amp; planning firm. <em>He writes the columns </em><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/category/chasing-value/"><em>Chasing Value</em></a><em> and </em><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/category/serious-money/"><em>Serious Money</em></a><em>. According to <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/wachovia-swings-loss-writedown-cuts/story.aspx?guid=%7B4805DAB2%2D7B75%2D4199%2D913E%2DEE7D5113E689%7D">MarketWatch</a> Wachovia "lost $8.86 billion, or $4.20 a share, in the second quarter, compared to a profit of $2.34 billion, or $1.20 a share, a year ago. On an adjusted basis, it lost $1.27 a share; analysts polled by FactSet Research had expected a loss of 71 cents a share."</p>
<p>Yikes. A loss of $8.9 billion -- how is that even possible? The company also slashed its dividend to just 5 cents a share and is closing down its wholesale mortgage operations. </p>
<p>I guess the real question is barring a takeover, how long will it be till the whole bank gets shut down? Just think the loss is equal to a third of its entire market cap.</p>

With oil steady and no economic data out today, Wall Street will focus on earnings.<br /><br /><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas">Apple Inc.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas">AAPL</a>) reported after the close Monday a <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/07/21/apple-shares-drop-4-after-reporting-record-quarter/">record quarter</a> that beat analyst estimates, posting a 31% surge in earnings. Mac and iPod sales satisfied investors, while iPhone sales were somewhat on the lighter side. What concerned investors most was the very weak guidance Apple gave, which was weak even by Apple's standards of lowballing. Other issues included margin squeeze and Jobs health. For example, Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson -- who was a former <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys">Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys">GS</a>) chief -- sometimes seems befuddled.<br /><br />So, why not bring on board some other super smart finance folks?<br /><br />Well, that's what Paulson is doing. In fact, this week he <a href="http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/07/21/business/21goldman.php">snagged</a> Ken Wilson, who is the vice chairman of investment banking and chairman of financial institutions business at Goldman. Interestingly enough, he's been structuring some of the key banking deals over the past year, such as the financing of <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/national-city-corporation/ncc/nys">National City Corporation</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/national-city-corporation/ncc/nys">NCC</a>) and advisory work for <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">Wachovia Corporation</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">WB</a>).<br /><br />True, Wilson's stint will be short-term (lasting until January 1st, when George Bush will leave the White House). But, for the US taxpayers, it's a pretty good deal. After all, he is going to forgo any compensation.<br />

WB reports earnings tomorrow morning before the open and is pretty much in the same boat as BAC, so this, along with other positive earnings from financial stocks last week could imply that Wachovia will see a good reaction to their release. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on WB.<br /><br />After hitting a one-year high of $53.10 in September, the stock hit a one-year low of $7.80 last week. WB opened this morning at $13.52. So far today the stock has hit a low of $12.98 and a high of $14.66. As of 12:55, WB is trading at $13.61, up 64 cents (4.9%). The chart for WB looks bearish and steady, while <a target="_blank" href="http://www.iotogo.com/spoutlookonline">S&amp;P</a> gives the stock its lowest 1 STARS (out of 5) strong sell rating.<br /><br />For a bullish hedged play on this stock, I would consider an August <a target="_blank" href="http://www.iotogo.com/HSCS">bull-put credit spread</a> below the $7.50 range. A bull-put credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of put options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make a 4.2% return in just four weeks as long as WB is above $7.50 at October expiration. Wachovia would have to fall by more than 44% before we would start to lose money. <br /><br />WB hasn't been below $7.50 at all in the past year and has shown support just below $10 recently. This trade could be risky if the company's earnings (due out tomorrow morning) disappoint, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by the support the stock might find at its year low at $7.80.<br /><br /><em>Brent Archer is an options analyst and writer at <a target="_blank" href="http://www.iotogo.com/aolblogba">Investors Observer</a>. The SEC was first established after the Great Depression to protect the general public from the shady stock dealings that caused that catastrophe. But the <em><a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121642263809866665.html?mod=hps_us_whats_news">Wall Street Journal</a></em> reports that the SEC has now become the epitome of the very thing that it's supposed to prevent.</p>
<p>That's thanks to a temporary rule it created last Tuesday that blocks the short selling of the stock of 19 big banks and financial institutions unless the short sellers can borrow those shares. (As <em><a href="http://online.barrons.com/article/SB121642085636866513.html?mod=b_hpp_9_0002_b_this_weeks_magazine_home_right">Barron's</a></em> [subscription required] points out -- it's interesting that the SEC has announced it is enforcing this so-called naked short rule since the practice is already illegal). </p>
<p>I can only imagine the profit opportunities available to those who had early access to this list of 19 -- which according to my calculations have risen an average of 27.5% since Tuesday. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/federal-national-mortgage-association/fnm/nys"><font color="#0072bc">Fannie Mae</font></a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/federal-national-mortgage-association/fnm/nys"><font color="#0072bc">FNM</font></a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/federal-home-loan-mortgage-corporation/fre/nys"><font color="#0072bc">Freddie Mac</font></a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/federal-home-loan-mortgage-corporation/fre/nys"><font color="#0072bc">FRE</font></a>) -- whose CEO made $20 million last year, according to <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25740405/">AP</a> -- are the biggest winners -- up 90% and 74.5% respectively since then. Meanwhile, all the other companies that the SEC did not protect are wondering why they were not on the list.</p><p>The SEC's actions raise many questions:</p>
<ul>
    <li>Why did the SEC decide to enforce the prohibition on naked short selling just on these 19 companies? Why not enforce it against <em>all</em> companies? </li>
    <li>Why did the government allow our financial system to become so vulnerable that short sellers could easily profit from its fragility? </li>
    <li>Why not punish those who mismanaged these financial institutions rather than those who profit from <em>exposing </em>that mismanagement? </li>
</ul>
<p>I don't know the answers to these questions. My hunch is that the answers are a combination of a "free market" political philosophy, the way Wall Street gets paid -- as a percentage of big deals rather than the long-term profits (or losses) from them -- and the amount of money Wall Street gives to get politicians into office. </p>
<p>The SEC's actions suggest that it values the executives of those 19 companies far more than it does the viability of the financial system. If it had been concerned about protecting investors, it would have enforced aggressively its own regulations during the <em>inhalation stage</em> of the currently <em>exhaling</em> credit bubble.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, its decision to enforce its naked short selling rule for only 19 companies is a unique form of market manipulation -- the very thing the SEC was established to prevent.</p>

Right now we are so stuck on the banking problems and on the companies bleeding from higher energy prices that nobody cares about all of this cash, which will be used to shrink equity. They won't care because the banks, brokers and homebuilders, and the hobbled companies that use oil, have to issue so much equity that you can't see the effect of the equity shrinkage. But it will eventually matter. It has to matter that Deere has taken out 10% of its stock in the last four years. It does matter that <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-black-and-decker-corporation/bdk/nys">Black &amp; Decker</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-black-and-decker-corporation/bdk/nys">BDK</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=BDK" target="blank">Cramer's Take</a>) has eliminated almost 20% of its equity. Emerson's taken out 5%, same with <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-boeing-company/ba/nys">Boeing</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-boeing-company/ba/nys">BA</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=BA" target="blank">Cramer's Take</a>). There's just a huge amount of equity being shrunk. <br /><br /> It is not too soon to begin thinking of the post-banking world, where much of the banks' equity is wiped out. To me it will go to these stocks after the money that's headed to oil and gas, a segment that I think will only be expanding as oil and gas gets added to the S&amp;P to replace all of the banks that are coming out of it. <br /><br /> Don't focus on these amounts of cash yet. But when we blow through the banks, they will be worth looking at for certain. <br /><br /> Random musings: Opco's "sell" call on <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">Wachovia</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">WB</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=WB" target="blank">Cramer's Take</a>) yesterday seemed too glib. As Bob Steel, the new CEO, tries to figure out what to do, it isn't worth downgrading here. Steel's splitting WB into a good and bad bank, and it may actually restore some value rather quickly. I have hopes that it will work, but events are overcoming the situation so fast that it will be hard to split WB into a good and bad bank. This one's too big to fail, by the way, if you are caring. Nonperformers for this Pick-a-Pay portfolio bought from Golden West are at 3.8%. That's just catastrophic. But the actual total portfolio is still not bad at 1.18% of total, and it isn't until 2% that I really worry -- that's not included in the report. ... JNJ's quarter is magnificent. <ul>
    <li> Oppenheimer downgraded shares of <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">Wachovia</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">WB</a>) to Underperform from Perform as they believe the outlook is "bleak" for equity shareholders. The firm thinks Wachovia's expenses can't come down fast enough too offset earnings erosion. <br /></li>
    <li>Wachovia downgraded shares of <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/american-international-group-inc/aig/nys">American International Group</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/american-international-group-inc/aig/nys">AIG</a>) to Market Perform from Outperform as they believe AIG's CDO valuations worsened in Q2, which could result in a $2B-$7B after tax "valuation adjustment." Wachovia expects the value of AIG's core insurance franchise to be obscured by its credit exposure. <br /></li>
    <li>Collins Stewart cut <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bt-group-plc/bt/nys">BT Group</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bt-group-plc/bt/nys">BT</a>) to Hold from Buy on concerns surrounding the company's fiber network expansion.</li>

You don't need me to tell you that there's no quick fix for any of these things. But what might help you understand why it feels so bad this time is that I have never, in my career, seen so many companies go off track at the same time. This is one unbelievable moment, and it is made more horrible by the day as companies' stocks just get pummeled, causing people to then question the very viability of the companies involved. <br /><br /> First, obviously, are <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/federal-national-mortgage-association/fnm/nys">Fannie Mae</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/federal-national-mortgage-association/fnm/nys">FNM</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=FNM">Cramer's Take</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/federal-home-loan-mortgage-corporation/fre/nys">Freddie Mac</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/federal-home-loan-mortgage-corporation/fre/nys">FRE</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=FRE">Cramer's Take</a>). We don't know what will happen, but we do know that their futures are much darker than their pasts. Their best hope: a Democrat becomes president and shows the usual love to both. But as investments, they are pretty much perma-losers going forward. The losses are that heavy. Yes, it is true that two years from now they will be better, but will the government let them limp through to that? View them as calls on a Democratic win. <br /><br /> We all know that <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">Citigroup</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">C</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=C">Cramer's Take</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">Wachovia</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">WB</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=WB">Cramer's Take</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/washington-mutual-incorporated/wm/nys">Washington Mutual</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/washington-mutual-incorporated/wm/nys">WM</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=WM">Cramer's Take</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/national-city-corporation/ncc/nys">National City</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/national-city-corporation/ncc/nys">NCC</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=NCC">Cramer's Take</a>) are in trouble. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">Bank of America</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">BAC</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=BAC">Cramer's Take</a>) says it isn't in trouble, but obviously the market doesn't believe management because the stock failed to rally when it said its dividend was safe. Any short-selling hedge fund could hire 30 actors and have them line up at a Washington Mutual or two and get a bank run going. Then we would have to hear about a "hasty" Treasury department plan to bail out WM. Hasty? Their charts are indicating there is much more devastation ahead. Every one of them is small enough to fail, and no one would give a darn. If the FDIC follows the trail blazed by <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/indymac-bancorp-inc/imb/nys">IndyMac</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/indymac-bancorp-inc/imb/nys">IMB</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=IMB">Cramer's Take</a>) it would be great because IndyMac Federal isn't foreclosing anymore. Get rid of the foreclosures, get rid of some of the overhang. But is that the plan, or do they have no place to put the foreclosed loans? <br /><br /> We know that the Gang of Four -- <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/mbia-inc/mbi/nys">MBIA</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/mbia-inc/mbi/nys">MBI</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=MBI">Cramer's Take</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/mgic-investment-corp-milwaukee-wi/mtg/nys">MGIC</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/mgic-investment-corp-milwaukee-wi/mtg/nys">MTG</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=MTG">Cramer's Take</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-pmi-group-inc/pmi/nys">PMI</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-pmi-group-inc/pmi/nys">PMI</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=PMI">Cramer's Take</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/ambac-financial-group-inc/abk/nys">Ambac</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/ambac-financial-group-inc/abk/nys">ABK</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=ABK">Cramer's Take</a>) -- has been obliterated, a long-running saga of puffing by management and disastrous numbers. These companies are important, even if everyone seems to think that they have gone down without much repercussion other than the 40th story about how private mortgage insurers are now raising rates. Golly gee, who is paying them anything? They don't have enough money to pay the bank back for heaven's sake! <br /><br /> For example, they are very important to <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/american-international-group-inc/aig/nys">AIG</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/american-international-group-inc/aig/nys">AIG</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=AIG">Cramer's Take</a>), which seems to have found no bottom. None at all. Remember that funny dividend boost at AIG? What was that about? <br /><br /> There are tons of other financial insurers no one's paying attention to that seem to go down pretty constantly. An outfit like <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/xl-capital-limited/xl/nys">XL</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/xl-capital-limited/xl/nys">XL</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=XL">Cramer's Take</a>) seems like it is a wasting asset. Or how about <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/genworth-financial-inc/gnw/nys">Genworth</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/genworth-financial-inc/gnw/nys">GNW</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=GNW">Cramer's Take</a>), which is selling well below book value? <br /><br /> Then there is everything auto, not just <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/ford-motor-company/f/nys">Ford</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/ford-motor-company/f/nys">F</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=F">Cramer's Take</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/general-motors-corporation/gm/nys">GM</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/general-motors-corporation/gm/nys">GM</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=GM">Cramer's Take</a>) (although do you really need anything else to go wrong there?) -- outfits like <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/visteon-corporation/vc/nys">Visteon</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/visteon-corporation/vc/nys">VC</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=VC">Cramer's Take</a>) or <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/autonation-inc/an/nys">Autonation</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/autonation-inc/an/nys">AN</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=AN">Cramer's Take</a>) or <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/carmax-inc/kmx/nys">Carmax</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/carmax-inc/kmx/nys">KMX</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=KMX">Cramer's Take</a>) aren't going to get through this one unscathed. <br /><br /> Or how about the homebuilders? I don't. How about that nifty Lennar upgrade by UBS? Sold to you, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/ubs-ag-switzerland/ubs/nys">UBS</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/ubs-ag-switzerland/ubs/nys">UBS</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=UBS">Cramer's Take</a>), along with all of the toxic mortgages you STILL OWN! <br /><br /> I am not even going to include the airlines, they are all hopeless in my opinion, except for maybe <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/southwest-airlines-co/luv/nys">Southwest </a>(NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/southwest-airlines-co/luv/nys">LUV</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=LUV">Cramer's Take</a>). How about <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys">Macy's</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys">M</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=M">Cramer's Take</a>) -- where's that headed? <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sears-holdings-corporation/shld/nas">Sears</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sears-holdings-corporation/shld/nas">SHLD</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=SHLD">Cramer's Take</a>)? OUCH! <br /><br /> You can see some techs folding, but only a handful. Maybe because only <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/advanced-micro-devices-inc/amd/nys">AMD</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/advanced-micro-devices-inc/amd/nys">AMD</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=AMD">Cramer's Take</a>) is on the fiscal ropes do people see "relative strength" in tech, whatever that means. <br /><br /> The problem is that the dire stocks, the ones I have listed, are so numerous and so concentrated with so little hope for rescue that it is hard to imagine anything but more downside for these stocks and therefore more downside for the rest of the market, simply because they are so glaring, are owned by so many mutual funds and have so many roles to play in the real economy. <br /><br /> We know that things have gotten out of control because the IndyMac collapse -- widely predicted -- used a huge amount of the surplus the FDIC has, suddenly making the safety net seem like a flimsy piece of Brawny. <br /><br /> The bottom line here -- there is too much going wrong right now, too much to put us anywhere near sound footing. I suspect that every rally will be met with selling until we see a multitude of collapses like IndyMac. <br /><br /> I am not going to search for positives in any of these groups yet, and if they rally off the decision by the Treasury to make more explicit the Fannie and Freddie guarantees, I would scale out of them once again on any short squeeze like the one we had at yesterday's opening. <br /><br /> Someone asked me yesterday, "When do we bottom?" I said it wouldn't be until all the banks that have to fail do so and GM files bankruptcy along with Ford. I said it matter-of-factly, because I meant it and because it is obvious. <br /><br />--------------------------------<br /> RELATED LINKS: <br /><a href="http://www.thestreet.com/s/indymac-insurance-tab-could-hit-8b/newsanalysis/small-cap-stock-spotlight/10426345.html?puc=aoljjc"> IndyMac Insurance Tab Could Hit $8B</a> <br /><a href="http://www.thestreet.com/s/fannie-freddie-plan-staves-off-housing-disaster/newsanalysis/financial-services/10426251.html?puc=aoljjc"> Fannie, Freddie Plan Staves Off Housing Disaster</a> <br />--------------------------------<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;"> Jim Cramer is a director and co-founder of TheStreet.com. While there has been speculation that the <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/fuld-looking-ways-take-lehman/story.aspx?guid=%7B32D334A2%2D38BE%2D4929%2D94AD%2DE3ED75E0CD0D%7D">bank may be taken private</a>, an option that I think is very interesting, others have said that another bank is going to swoop in and take over the company. At the discount levels the stock is trading, that may make sense. The only problem is who the buyer will be.</p>
<p>MarketWatch has an interesting article about this issue and the claim is that there <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/lehman-bidders-thin-ground-analysts/story.aspx?guid=%7BE8A49363%2DF77A%2D428E%2DB28A%2DA9A24F0B4D20%7D">really is no one out there to make a bid</a> for the struggling investment bank. The <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/lehman-bidders-thin-ground-analysts/story.aspx?guid=%7BE8A49363%2DF77A%2D428E%2DB28A%2DA9A24F0B4D20%7D">article</a> quotes Jeff Harte, a securities industry analyst at Sandler O'Neill &amp; Partners, " I'm hard pressed to give you many viable buyers of Lehman. Most large banks are focused on their own capital issues. Even if a bidder did come forward, it would have to win over a lot of Lehman employees -- who control around 30% of the stock -- or risk losing them once the deal was complete." </p>
<p>The most obvious suitor would be <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/jpmorgan-and-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPMorgan</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/jpmorgan-and-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPM</a>), but it has its hands full with Bear Stearns. Other banks like <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">Citigroup</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">C</a>) or <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">Wachovia</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys">WB</a>) are fighting for survival. That leaves us with European banks, many of whom are also trying to stay afloat. One bank that has the money needed to finance a deal could be <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/deutsche-bank-ag-germany/db/nys">Deutsche Bank</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/deutsche-bank-ag-germany/db/nys">DB</a>). It could be interested in a deal as it would gain a foothold into the fixed-income desk at Lehman. The only problem is that the bank is focused on growing its retail banking franchise, not investment banking.</p>
<p>Which leaves us with the first option as the best one. Go private. Clean up the balance sheet, get profitable, wait a few years for the financial storm to pass, and go public once again.</p>
